Nicky Sheales BA Hons 3D Design, Art Teacher’s Cert, Reg Mgr/NVQ 4, CRB checked (2011)
I am experienced in offering tuition in most general art techniques particularly drawing skills and mixed media. I specialise in teaching all aspects of ceramics including hand built, thrown and sculptural. I aim to fire your imagination and help you bring your ideas to life, whether as functional or purely decorative pieces.
Tuition sessions also make an ideal gift for all ages and abilities. Gift Vouchers are available to any amount (redeemable for my artworks and/or tuition).
I can offer tuition tailored to the individual’s needs and aspirations, whether from my house and garden studio or in your own home. I am also happy to lead larger practical group sessions, which can be accommodated in your communal setting. Activities can be adapted to particular themes or for special occasions such as birthdays and to suit the age group, interests and skills range of the people involved. In support of this, I have many years experience of working with children, adults, older people and people with disabilities.
I can work day times or evenings, I am very flexible and also available for demonstrations and talks to groups of all sizes. Please do feel free to contact me to chat about options.
It is possible to make a myriad of objects and artefacts out of clay from garden sculptures to delicate jewellery. This could be the ideal opportunity to create the bowl/dish/vase/tiles/door plaque/figure/green man, portrait head or animal you have been meaning to make!
A series of 2/3 sessions (with a break in between to allow for firing work) is usual to allow sufficient time to complete work, although ‘one off’’ workshops of a minimum of 2.5hrs can be adequate to achieve professional results.
Private tuition in my studio is limited to two people and starts at £12 per hour for individual tuition or £20 per hour for two people. Child rates are negotiable, depending on numbers, ages, whether parent/carers present to assist etc. For this kind of tuition some very basic materials costs (and for ceramics a kiln firing pro rata fee) will be incurred. This will always be explained and agreed at the outset of any project. There is no charge for experimenting with clay, as until the point of its first firing, it can always be reused!
Group sessions up to a maximum of 4 people can be accommodated either in my house (in the more spacious open plan kitchen/living area) or in the garden in fine weather. Rates start at £40pp for a 3 hour workshop inclusive of materials and light refreshments. Alternatively, for larger groups in your own setting, rates are negotiable dependent upon numbers and the amount of preparation/follow up firing and glazing time to be taken into consideration.
For those keen to do more, quantities of clay may be purchased and tools/materials can be ordered. Electric kiln firing space is available for potters with some experience. Other resources may be available for sale at cost.
