Nicky’s favourite Edward Lear poem has inspired this series of works. All the tiny owls & pussycats are unique, some potters use moulds to make a number of similar pieces but being a restless soul, she likes to make each different & imbue character with a relationship & positioning unique to every sculpture. Made in stages from stoneware clay, the base is an upturned pinch pot with clay shell & starfish embellishments, the boat is textured slabs which are mitred & joined. In the small sailing boat versions, each owl & pussycat is not much more than an inch high and is individually sculpted adding more detail as clay progressively dries. Expressive faces come to life in the making & glazing process. Colourful versions which are embellished with stars & a moon or hearts & flowers instead of a boat, are made in earthenware clay as the lower firing temperature ensures vibrancy of the underglaze colours. Bas relief versions are suited to wall hanging indoors on a plate stand or perhaps a sheltered position in the garden, being highly frost resistant. This range has been incredibly popular, often with each sculpture being chosen to convey special meaning such as a gift for a wedding, birthday or as a very poignant momento of a loved one. As a consequence they have travelled all over the world to their forever homes. Nicky has limited availability of pieces at any one time, but do please enquire if you wish to commission a sculpture or keepsake from this range.
